Cycling in Tofino, BC
Tofino is a strong B.C. cycling destination for riders interested in a car-light Pacific coast ride linking town, beaches and Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. In the wider Alberni-Clayoquot area, the riding character is shaped by Pacific coast pathways, valley roads and all-weather adventure. The west coast is wet, exposed and busy in peak season. Purpose-built multi-use paths are the best choice for casual riders; backroads suit more experienced riders.

For a first visit, build the day around one of the route ideas below rather than simply choosing the shortest road between two points. Match the route to your bike, surface preference, traffic comfort and available daylight.
This is one of the cleanest visitor-oriented cycling experiences in B.C.: riders can leave town on a purpose-built path and continue into the national park. Parks Canada says cycling in the Long Beach Unit is permitted on beaches and ʔapsčiik t̓ašii, not on most hiking trails. Winter debris and weather are significant; the pathway is best enjoyed mid-April to mid-October.

How to plan the ride
If you are visiting Tofino for the first time, start with the most separated, signed or trail-based option that fits your bike, then add road mileage only after checking the current local map. Weather, construction, wildfire conditions, seasonal maintenance and trail closures can change quickly in B.C., so confirm the latest official notice on the day you ride.
Before you ride
- Check Parks Canada restrictions before entering national-park trails.
- Use fenders/lights in wet weather and expect wildlife and debris after storms.
B.C. cycling rules still apply: obey traffic controls, ride in the permitted direction, use required lights and reflectors after dark, and wear an approved bicycle helmet. On shared paths, slow down around people walking, dogs, children and other riders; local bylaws or park rules may add extra restrictions.
